University College London - Investigating the superconducting properties of graphene

Edoardo Paluan interned with the Department of Physics & Astronomy at University College London and the London Centre for Nanotechnology, contributing to research led by Prof. Chris Pickard and Dr. Chris Howard (CMMP). The project, conducted in collaboration with Stanford University and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, explored methods for inducing superconductivity in graphene—a single layer of carbon atoms with extraordinary potential for future electronics. The findings were published in Nature Communications, representing a significant step toward realizing superconducting graphene-based technologies.

King's College London - Modelling the MoEDAL particle detector at CERN

As part of his early exploration into computational physics, Edoardo developed simulations of the internal conditions of CERN’s MoEDAL particle detector. This project marked his first venture into programming, during which he taught himself the fundamentals of Fortran and C++. By successfully replicating the detector’s environment, he contributed to a deeper understanding of its experimental behavior. This experience was foundational to his interest in computational modelling and software development.

King's College London - Rebuilding the KCL Telescope

At King’s College London, Edoardo also participated in a project to restore and modernize the university’s telescope. This initiative combined practical engineering with astronomical observation, giving him hands-on experience in instrument building and observational physics.

2014 - King’s Experience Awards

Given for learning that is undertaken outside the formal curriculum. They are based on experiential learning, which can include volunteering in local or international contexts, paid employment, or undertaking additional learning, such as learning another language.
The King’s Experience Awards require to combine experiential learning with further, supported reflection and study, and to submit an assessment.

The King’s Experience Awards provide opportunities to enhance learning and employability, by broadening and deepening the student’s experience and by recognising and rewarding the activities undertaken alongside formal studies.
